Detroit area renters are looking to get of town, report

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

As Detroit prepares to add thousands of new rental units to meet a rising demand for apartments, a recent report suggests that many renters currently living in the city are looking to get out of town. By analyzing search data on its website, Apartment List’s Renter Migration Report found the Motor City had the nation’s second highest percentage of renters looking at apartments outside the metro area.

The number one spot for renters looking to leave went to Orlando, but that city saw a high percentage of inbound searches too, suggesting that it is likely experiencing a change in population rather than an outright decline. Meanwhile, Detroit lagged behind other cities when it came to attracting renters from elsewhere—especially from areas outside of the Midwest.

According to the report, top cities searched by Apartment List users in metropolitan Detroit were Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Grand Rapids. Toledo, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and Chicago also ranked high.

It is important to note that search data isn’t always indicative of action. In other words, just because individuals are looking at apartments outside of a given city, it doesn’t mean they will necessarily leave. The so-called “aspirational migration” data also fails to take the movement of non-renters into consideration.

Sabina “Bina” West was a country school teacher in Michigan’s Thumb before becoming a successful businesswoman and a political force. In 1892, she helped make thousands of other womens’ lives more secure by making it possible for them to buy life insurance policies without a husband or male relative.

Rachel Clark, from the Michigan History Center, talks with Stateside about the history of the Woman's Life Insurance Society, and how West built a successful business that is still running today.

How often will the Detroit Lions use 2 tight end sets in 2019?

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

During Tuesday’s Organized Team Activities, it was clear the Detroit Lions valued their tight ends. Team rules are very strict about what observations we can and cannot report, so instead of getting into specifics about what I saw, I’ll offer this paragraph from Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com to illustrate my point:

The Lions ran a goal line drill against the defense using just tight ends during Tuesday’s practice. I can’t say I’ve ever seen that before. I view that as an indication that the position will be have some prominence in the new scheme.

He’s not exaggerating there. There were four or five tight ends lined up on a play. No running backs. No wide receivers.

But what sort of increase in tight end usage can we expect for the 2019 season? “12 personnel” is the new, hot item which refers to an offensive formation with one running back and two tight ends (and likely two wide receivers). Detroit is certainly expected to go 12 personnel more than last year, when they used that formation just 15 percent of the time (20th in the league). Obviously, last year the team didn’t have the talent to warrant using that formation more often.

But now with two big investments in free agent Jesse James and first-round pick T.J. Hockenson and a brand-new offensive coordinator—Darrell Bevell—that loves to get physical and run the ball, Detroit is going to bring back the tight end position. Just take this paragraph from our friends at Field Gulls during the Bevell era:

Whether or not this is effective remains to be determined, but one method Carroll has used to try to beat this is by utilizing two tight end sets, or “12 personnel” groupings. You may remember how in 2011 the Seahawks signed Zach Miller to a long term deal with John Carlson, Anthony McCoy and Cameron Morrah already in tow, or the many times when we began the season with four tight ends in our roster. Just earlier this year Seattle was poised to sign Jermichael Finley when they already had Miller, McCoy, Luke Willson and Cooper Helfet on the roster.

But I think one misconception is that the Lions will be using 12 personnel the majority of the time. That’s very unlikely to be true.

If the Lions were to sport two tight ends on the field more often than not, they’d be sailing in uncharted territory in the modern era of football. Last year, the team with the highest percentage of plays in 12 personnel was the Philadelphia Eagles with 36 percent. The NFL average was just 17 percent. In 2017, the highest percentage was Baltimore with 34 percent, and the year before that it was 31 percent.

So if you’re expecting to see two tight ends on the field for the majority of the offensive snaps, scale it back a little. This is still an era of football in which the spread reigns supreme. The Lions will be using three-wide sets the majority of their offensive snaps, just like 31 of 32 teams did last year.*

That being said, even if the Lions were to make a modest jump in percentage of 12 personnel sets, it would be significant. Say Detroit went from 15 percent last year to 25 percent this year. That would be approximately 100 more plays in two-tight end sets or just over six more per game. That’s would certainly be a significant amount and a noticeable change in philosophy.

*The only exception was the 49ers, who went three wide just 39 percent of the time. Interestingly, they were still very low in 12 personnel, utilizing it just 10 percent of the time. Their “majority” formation was 21 (two running backs, one tight end), which they used 41 percent of the time.

The OBC: MacT

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Craig MacTavish has always been a smart guy. So, while today’s announcement he’s signed on to coach in the KHL just a couple of weeks into the tenure of new POHO and GM Ken Holland wasn’t expected in terms of timing, it’s no surprise he read the writing on the wall and left on his own terms rather than be pushed out.

It’s also no surprise, given the all the failure and ineptitude fans have witnessed for more than a decade, that plenty of people have been applauding his exit as VP of hockey operations today. Some of it, of course, has been over the top by those feeling the need to provide a swift kick in the ass on MacTavish’s way out the door to HC Lokomotiv, but, again, that comes with the territory when the bottom line is all about winning or losing.

The Oilers haven’t won nearly enough since reaching the 2006 Stanley Cup final with MacTavish behind the bench and they’ve been downright dreadful during stretches in which he has held various positions in the front office, including GM. After 701 regular season games, 113 more in playoffs and three Stanley Cups as a player, then 656 games as head coach before moving into the front office, it was time to go. Of that there is no question.

That said, and having known MacTavish for 30 years, I’d like to think I can add a little perspective. That doesn’t change the bottom line in a business where results are everything – there are those of you who don’t give a damn about context or back-stories and that’s OK — but after all these years, I wish MacT nothing but good luck with what comes next. There are many reasons for that, and most of them have nothing to do with winning or losing.

What I’ve always seen when I look at MacTavish is a guy who turned his life around when he arrived in Edmonton from the Boston Bruins for the 1985-86 season after serving one year in prison for vehicular homicide in the death of Kim Radley in 1984 – that’s always been the elephant in the room for MacTavish and I touched on it here. There’s a link in the story to a full account of what happened.

That chapter in MacTavish’s life happened before I arrived in Edmonton and it will always be a part of his. What I saw came in the aftermath, in trips to Boston when MacTavish would meet with Radley’s parents, Ron and Hazel Foote, to sit and talk. He never once turned away from being responsible for her death. He never once offered any excuses. Instead, he took their forgiveness and made the most of it – not in words, but in actions.

What happened is more than a “mistake.” I would never characterize the death of Radley as that, but we are all flawed in one way or another. We all make bad choices. How do we respond after that? What comes next? How do we choose to conduct ourselves and live our lives? I know how I saw MacTavish respond after I arrived in Edmonton. The on-ice accomplishments we know about. Away from the rink, MacT is one of the most compassionate and loyal men I’ve ever met. He’s a good man. An honest man.

When my wife and I were struggling to cope during the three months our son Sam spent in NICU after being born three months premature, MacTavish would always find time once the scrum had broken up to ask how he was doing, how we were doing. In later years, he’d make a point of saying hello to Sam and my wife Analyn on the rare occasions I’d bring them to the rink. He always nagged me to quit smoking, especially after Sam was born.

When the Edmonton Sun fired me in January of 2007, one of the first calls I got was from MacTavish. At a time when it seemed like the world had come crashing down around me, he provided words of encouragement and comfort. It’s a call I didn’t expect, but one he thought to make. When you get knocked off your perch in a job like that, a lot of people forget your phone number. He never did.

A year ago, MacTavish joined me in the studio at 630 CHED to help promote Hockey Helps the Homeless in Edmonton – he quietly took part in a lot of charitable initiative around the city without any fanfare. It had been a while since we talked, but we got a chance to catch up. I wondered then, given how badly things had been going with the Oilers for years upon years, how much longer he’d be here. We got our answer today.

Your perspective of MacTavish doesn’t have to align with mine. I don’t expect it to. None of what I’ve mentioned changes the fact the Oilers haven’t been close to good enough all these years and MacTavish has to wear some of that. So do others in hockey ops, and we will see more people out the door in the coming weeks. That, under the circumstances, is as it should be. That’s the gig. That’s how it works, or is supposed to work.

I can tell you with some certainty that those who called for the dismantling of what’s become known as the Old Boys Club since MacTavish and Kevin Lowe transitioned from players to coaches to management here, are going to get their way. MacTavish won’t be the last to walk out the door. That, again, is how it should be. I take no joy in that.

Detroit Tigers: Turnbull, Norris continue to thrive heading into May

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Former American League Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer was the first to go down for the Tigers, and after being shut down in Spring Training, it was determined that Tommy John Surgery would end his 2019 for the Detroit Tigers before it even started.

The next starter to fall due to injury was Matt Moore, who required season-ending surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Jordan Zimmermann completed the trifecta, as the 32-year-old righty exited his start last week in Boston with discomfort in his right elbow. It was determined that he sprained his UCL.

Zimmermann was able to narrowly avoid Tommy John Surgery, but his status remains up in the air as the calendar flips to the month of May. But despite these crippling injuries, the starting staff has remained effective thanks to multiple contributions from young hurlers.

Two of these pitchers, right-hander Spencer Turnbull and lefty Daniel Norris, continued their successful starts to 2019 with a pair of masterful starts in the city of brotherly love.

Turnbull tossed six innings of one-run ball to open the two-game series, only walking two batters while striking out five. He would pick up his second win of the season, shutting down the powerful Phillies lineup by being effectively wild.

The 26-year-old fell behind a number of batters and hit two, but never found himself in much trouble as he led his team to a much-needed victory to snap a four-game losing streak. Turnbull features great stuff, including a lively two-seam fastball, diving changeup, a curveball, and a slider.

Wicked movement on his fastball coupled with a deadly out-pitch curveball kept Phillies hitters off balance all night long, and at the end of his outing, Turnbull managed to lower his ERA to 2.53, good enough for 12th-best in baseball.

It can be argued that the rookie Turnbull has been the Tigers second-best starter this season, and after establishing himself early in the Spring and translating his success to the regular season, he’s certainly here to stay.

Daniel Norris, another starter tasked with picking up the slack caused by injuries, also continued his stellar start to 2019 in Philadelphia. He threw five innings of one-run ball in the Tigers loss Wednesday night, scattering five hits while striking out four.

Norris, who began the year in the bullpen after Moore was given the Tigers final rotation spot, has been effective in three starts since sliding into the injury-riddled rotation. The 26-year-old owns a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched as a starter, gaining confidence with each outing.

The left-hander is pitching with a purpose, attempting to prove to the organization that he belongs in the starting rotation conversation moving forward. His resurgence after an injury-filled 2018, combined with the breakout season for Turnbull has softened the blow of losing three starters.

Matt Boyd and Tyson Ross are the only two starters left standing who broke camp in the rotation, and like Turnbull and Norris, they’ve also been effective. The lefty Boyd has emerged as a highly coveted trade chip, while the veteran Ross has been durable in five starts.
